Kodai Iwamoto transforms mass-produced plastic pipes to ‘Ex-portation,’ a set of flower vases on the show during Milan design week. Researching the potential of combining an old manufacturing process using a cheap, easily-available substance, the Japanese merchandise designer applied the method of glass blowing to flip plastic tubes used to disperse water into works of art.
By applying air pressure to a closed pipe, Kodai Iwamoto then slowly warmed the tube with a furnace to make it soft and moldable. As with glass blowing, many parts such as the shape of the mold, air-pressure and also the rate of heating the pipe’s surface affects the form of an object. The collection of vases created out of plastic tubes will be exhibited as part of Ventura future from 17 to 22 of April.
